I love traveling, Hunter not so much, so I knew it would take some convincing to get her to agree to go out to Phoenix, AZ with me for the ShowIt United Photography Conference. Thankfully she agreed because tickets were bought 😉 Then the morning we were leaving, I texted Hunter & said “Grand Canyon is only 3.5 hour drive from Phoenix, should we go?”…and within a few minutes we both agreed that we should change our flights & do a road trip through Northern Arizona. This was our first trip together without the whole family…growing up as the oldest of 10 kids, we are used to doing everything together, what’s a trip without everyone? We were definitely a little nervous, I think Mom was more nervous about it then we were but after a tearful goodbye with the little siblings, we were on our way!
ShowIt United Conference was amazing, it deserves a whole other blog post, we learned so much, met so many talented people and left with our business brains filled to the brim with ideas! After the last session on Wednesday morning, we hopped in our rental car and headed north. I gripped the steering wheel for dear life as we drove through the insane Phoenix traffic so was very relieved to get out into the country part! Page, AZ was where our hotel was booked for the night, about a 5 hour drive from Phoenix, with the little detour drive through Sedona.
We were in complete awe as we turned the corner & caught the first glimpse of the Sedona area. The next 24 hours would be spent with our mouths hanging open, taking in all of the beautiful sights. The song “Life is a Highway” came on the radio as we drove and it was one of those moments I’ll never forget. I felt so alive and free as we explored…and to get to make these memories with my best friend, made it even more special!
In Sedona, we ate lunch at this little cafe that sat in the mountainside and had the best pulled pork sandwich. Our GPS told us to take the 2nd exit on the roundabout no less than 25 times as we made our way back to the highway to Page. Once we arrived in Page for the night, we went to Walmart and got any food that looked good ( we were sick of fancy food so ended up with popcorn, cookie dough, and cheesecake) for dinner in the hotel room.
We woke up early the next day to head to watch the sunrise at Horseshoe Bend. This is one of those places that I’ve always wanted to visit and it was incredible!
Next stop was Lower Antelope Canyons, which is only about 5 miles from Horseshoe Bend, for a tour. Hands down this was the best part of the trip! It’s on Navajo Indian Reservation Land so it’s a guided tour for $25 and honestly, would do it again & again in a heartbeat. Cannot recommend it enough. Such a cool experience! You start by walking through this field (for lack of better word, it’s really a desert field?) and then come upon the staircases down into the canyon. You can’t see the canyon, the top is just a small opening on the ground. Once you’re down in the canyon, you will just be in complete amazement. You just want to stand and take in all of the beauty. It’s about a mile walk through before you climb back out at the end of the canyon. It’s nice to have the guide to give the history about the canyon and be able to ask some of the questions you have! Hunter & I both want to go back one day to do it again!
From Page, AZ (where Horseshoe Bend & Lower Antelope Canyon is) it’s about 2.5 hours to the South Rim Visitor Center in the Grand Canyon. What a beautiful drive! This was our first time seeing the Grand Canyon and again, we couldn’t believe our eyes! It makes you really ponder how awesome our God is when you see the creation like this. He formed the whole world, yet He still cares about me. We stopped at every outlook along the way, all the cares of the world seemed to fade away as we were just so encaptured by the beauty.
And then we made the drive back to Phoenix to head back home! So many new favorite memories were made on this trip & we are already talking about the next one!
