Sarah from Flourish Grace Calligraphy is a gem and amazes me every time we get to work together! I’ve had the joy of getting to know her over the last year & I know the future holds amazing things for her! Her little daughter is the cutest little one & definitely has her momma’s fashion sense!!
What made you want to work in the wedding industry?
Since I was a little girl I have always dreamt of being a part of the wedding industry. I would watch Father of the Bride on repeat and dream of one day working to help brides create their best day ever! In the movie, it was the moment when you first saw the inside of the tent and the stunning man made venue that overwhelmed me with awe and excitement and lite my desire to one day be a part of this industry.
What made you want to be a calligrapher?
Since I was in grade school I have been fascinated by handwriting. When I was 11 I wanted to learn the bubbly girly script that a few friends had, so I did. I spent a week in the summer studying the letterforms and mimicking the handwriting. Fast forward two years and I met a classmate that has the most perfect copperplate calligraphy script. So of course, I had to study and learn it. As I was growing up I was always eager to see how my teacher would write or what my friends Moms handwriting looked on a note she sent to school. Christmas time was my favorite because of all the cards we would get. My Mom would save the envelopes for me so I could see how the sender had addressed it.
Naturally when the stars aligned I realized that I could use this gift of writing in combination with my love of the wedding industry to be a calligrapher and I could not be happier. It is truly a passion for me and I get so much joy out of working with a couple. I am so grateful when they let me play a role in their big day.
What’s your favorite part of weddings?
My favorite part of a wedding is walking into the reception venue for the first time. The room is always stunning and uniquely their own. Looking around at the small details that show who the couple are and what they love is what makes each wedding so special.
What’s your favorite part of meeting new couples?
I love that each couple that comes to me has their own style. Not only does it excite me but it challenges me to reach outside of the box and create something that will be unique to them. I believe one of the best things about having a calligrapher is that you can personalize what you want down to the ink color and script in a way that a computer generated font could never do.
What is your inspiration for what you do?
My inspiration stems from everything I see. As someone who has always loved handwriting and scripts I notice them everywhere; from logos on trucks and business signs. Inspiration can stem from the most random sightings. Of course, my fellow calligraphers on instagram serve as the biggest inspiration. As calligraphers we study individual letterforms so seeing how someone created a new flourish on a B can excite you to try and it see if it works with your style. There is always so much room for experimentation and growth in lettering!
When should brides be booking you?
The earlier the better to ensure your date is saved. If you are having envelopes addressed working three months before the event is optimal. That gives us enough time to have them written and shipped or delivered to you before you mail them about 6 weeks prior to the event.
What marriage advice can you give to couples?
Have fun, create an event for YOU, and remember that at the end of the day you will be married and that’s all that really matters!
